Ca’Rugate is an historic family-run winery that bridges the gap between high-end commercial winemaking, tradition and trends. Founded in the early 1900s, the winery officially took on the name Ca' Rugate in 1986. Today, it is led by the fourth generation, Michele Tessari, who carries forward the legacy of the estate while adding his own touches – like opening up to markets worldwide.
During our visit, we were welcomed by Michele, Silvia Zantedeschi, a member of the export department, and Francesco Ganci, their sales manager, who guided us through the impressive history and philosophy of the winery. The estate spans 91 hectares, with a focus on the unique terroir of Valpolicella, Soave, and Lessini Durello. This philosophy is rooted in a respect for nature, which is evident in the team's commitment to organic farming – an increasingly challenging feat given the effects of climate change.
Ca' Rugate’s vineyards lie in the scenic hills surrounding Montecchia di Crosara, with two of the most important sites – Monte Fiorentine and Monte Alto – known for producing their standout Soave Classico wines. The terroir in these vineyards is distinctive, shaped by ancient lava flows that left behind soils rich in minerals, providing a unique foundation for viticulture. This volcanic landscape, abundant in nutrients, is particularly well-suited to the Garganega and Trebbiano grape varieties, imbuing the wines with their signature salinity, earthiness, and vibrant acidity.
As Francesco Ganci explained: “The volcanic soils here are key to the minerality and freshness of our wines. It gives them that unique edge, especially in our Soave.”
At Monte Fiorentine, located on mid-slope terrain, the Garganega vines thrive in rocky, mineral-laden soils that add structure and depth to the wines, giving them a flinty character and crisp acidity. This vineyard, with its volcanic foundation, lies at the heart of Ca' Rugate’s Soave wines, capturing the essence of the region’s terroir.
Further up, Monte Alto offers a slightly different expression of Soave. This high-altitude site experiences cooler temperatures, and its well-draining volcanic soil produces wines with a pronounced floral profile, often showcasing notes of white flowers and citrus. The saline edge in Monte Alto wines echoes the vineyard’s unique geology, adding a fresh vibrancy that complements the ripe fruit flavours. Together, these two vineyards demonstrate the depth and complexity that Ca' Rugate’s Soave wines achieve through a blend of thoughtful viticulture and the expressive qualities of this remarkable volcanic terroir.
As Michele Tessari explained: "We are lucky to work here, but with that luck comes responsibility. Our duty is to care for the land, nurture it, and ensure it thrives for future generations."
Tasting the Ca' Rugate wines
Yields on average 9,000 – 9,500 kg/ha (reduced to 8,500 kg/ha this year), resulting in sound, popular and incredibly commercial styles.
The Soave Classico Superiore 'Bucciato' 2022 benefits from extended skin contact, adding depth and complexity to the Garganega grape (which is 100% here). The pale gold wine, with a slight orange tinge, reveals aromas of almond, marzipan, nectarine, oregano and jasmine. On the palate, smooth tannins and a flinty character balance the long, salty finish. 13.5% abv.
The Amarone della Valpolicella 'Punta 470' 2019 is crafted from grapes grown at an altitude of 470 metres in a single vineyard, where the high elevation helps retain acidity, bringing a fresh lift to this traditionally robust style. The grapes undergo appassimento. Following this careful drying process, the wine is aged in large oak barrels, enhancing its structure while maintaining a bright freshness. A blend of Corvina 45%, Corvinone 40%, Rondinella 15%.
On the nose, the Punta 470 reveals layers of dark cherry and dried plum, complemented by subtle balsamic notes and a hint of spice. The palate is rich and concentrated, with youthful tannins and a grounded, earthy depth that reflects its volcanic origins. Despite its 15% alcohol, the wine remains balanced and poised, delivering a savoury finish that highlights the meticulous care taken in both vineyard and cellar. This Amarone is meaty, full-bodied, and harmonious – a poised expression of Valpolicella’s potential. 15% abv.
The Recioto di Soave 'La Perlara' 2019 is a charming example of 100% Garganega, crafted using the Recioto method to concentrate the grape’s flavours. Bright golden. On the nose, it opens with enticing aromas of nectarine jam, mandarin, figs, and a delicate touch of botrytis. The palate is luscious yet remarkably balanced, as the wine’s high acidity cuts through the sweetness, leaving a clean, refreshing finish. The volcanic soils impart a subtle mineral note that adds depth to the wine’s richness, creating a balanced profile that avoids any cloying sweetness—a refined and complex expression of Recioto. 13.5% abv, residual sugar 98.4 g/l.
