This year’s judging for the two awards took place in London and Manchester and involved over 150 people – the majority being wine and spirits consumers who, for the first time, sat alongside professionals to assess all the drinks entered together. This year saw a 20% increase in entries with a noticeable increase in submissions directly from producers, notably from Spain, with many of the country’s wines picking up awards.

The medals are hard fought, as the PCDA only awards one bronze, one silver and one winners prize per category, so to even appear on the shortlist is an achievement in itself.All the finalist and medal winning wines and spirits will appear on the PCDA’s unique Drinks Finder by the end of March.This enables consumers to access wines and spirits, via an online search facility, curated by ‘drinking occasion’.Each page contains an image of the bottle, box, can, consumer and professional judges’ feedback and a direct stockist link.This year-round marketing tool for entrants is included within the entry fee.
Highlights from the awards saw strong performances from Waitrose, Benchmark Drinks (particularly for the Kylie range) and Romania’s Cramele Recas, as well as some significant wins for smaller spirits producers, particularly those based in the UK.
It is the consumer element that gives the People’s Choice Drinks Awards its edge and why its founder, Janet Harrison, believes it continues to grow year after year, becoming more relevant and important for wine and spirits suppliers to enter. Plus it is the only major drinks awards to take place in Manchester and, as she says. “we really do things differently here”.
